Remote to meet your needs
I don't understand it but there are still a lot of
IT professionals which use Carbon Copy or PC Anywhere
over the modem phone line to connect to a remote site
or computer. Why would anyone waste a phone line for
that one remote support call every few months? What
about that remote office which needs to update the main
database once a day? Chances are they get charged for
long distance.
There are better and less expensive ways to remote
compute. In many cases, there are no monthly costs involved
and the startup cost is minimal.
You can do it over the Internet. It's not rocket science.
First, you install your remote control software. I prefer
PC Anywhere. But you can use VCN and many others. Some
stop reading right now and tell me that requires a static
IP and they cost more than phonelines - Wrong! All my
remotes are setup on dynamice IPs. These are IPs which
change every time the connection is made. So we have
to do a few things to be able to find the address again.

DynSite for Windows is an automatic IP updater, it
can update your current dynamic IP address on one or
many dynamic DNS services so that anyone can contact
you (in NetMeeting, CU-SeeMe, etc.) or access your FTP
server or Web site on your own computer using a fully
qualified domain name (e.g. myhost.dhs.org, where myhost
is a name of your choice), which will never change.
Instead of using your IP address that changes each time
you reconnect, your friends or relatives will always
be able to call you, whatever your IP address is, without
needing to know it. All you have to do is to sign-up
with one of the supported dynamic DNS services and to
run DynSite for Windows.
